TNT PRESENTS 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION FUNDRAISER

Teaneck New Theatre (TNT) is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a staged reading of four one-act plays by local playwrights. This one-performance-only fundraising event, directed by Lisa Garrabrant of Little Falls, will include refreshments and a talk-back with the playwrights, directors and cast. The anniversary festivities will take place at the Ethical Cultural Society of Bergen County, 687 Larch Ave., Teaneck, N.J., on Sunday, June 12, at 2:30 p.m.

Here’s what’s on the program.

Nearer My God To Thee, by Theodore D. Kemper, is a satirical look at a married pair in negotiations to buy an apartment in an extraordinary building with unusual perks. As the real estate agent enumerates those perks, the couple must decide how much status is enough! The husband is Jim Wirsz of Philadelphia. The wife is played by Montclair resident Jill Markos. The real estate agent is portrayed by Mark Gordon, a resident of Paramus.

In Number Our Days, by Katheryn White, Leo, a “mature” attorney, and Kitty, a stylish dress shop owner of the same age, meet to rekindle (or not) a youthful romance. He’s ready to resume a relationship with her. She’s an independent woman who’s wary of commitment. Leo is Ed Gross of Westwood. Kitty is played by Beatriz Esteban-Messina, a Union City resident.

Napa Valley Here We Come, by Frances Simon, is a comedy about two women on a balloon flight. While one of them is having the time of her life, her friend is convinced they’ll never make it back in one piece. The nervous woman is Nancy Price of Hackensack. The fun-loving friend is played by Teaneck resident Carol Campione. The patient pilot is portrayed by Jim Wirsz.

Wanderer, by Grace Wessbecher, is a provocative and illuminating encounter between a Russian prince and a faith healer in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1916. The prince has summoned the healer (a favorite of the opposite sex) to elicit his advice. But does the prince have a hidden agenda? Grigorii (the faith healer) is Martin Pfefferkorn of Clifton. Prince Felix is Montclair resident Brian Wood.

The narrator is Michelle Thomas-Hanson of Hackensack.

Tickets for this anniversary event are $15 (including refreshments). For reservations and information, call TNT at (201) 692-0200.

Coming from TNT in August: Anna in the Tropics, the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama by Nilo Cruz, at the Hackensack Cultural Arts Center.

Teaneck New Theatre (TNT)—in association with The Hackensack Cultural Arts Center (HCAC)—is staging the 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz. Union City resident Beatriz Esteban-Messina directs. The third production of TNT’s 25th anniversary season, Anna in the Tropics is being presented August 12-28 at The Hackensack Cultural Arts Center, 39 Broadway, Hackensack. Showtime is 8:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 3:00 p.m. on Sundays.

Anna in the Tropics is set in 1929 in Tampa, Florida, and tells the tale of a Cuban family, owners of a cigar factory that’s on the cusp of the old world and the new. Although cigars are still rolled by hand and a lector (an educated storyteller) has been hired to read to the workers, that traditional world is in jeopardy. The lector is Juan Julian (played by Jimmy Smits on Broadway), a charismatic man and lover of literature who decides to read Anna Karenina to the employees—a choice that will have unintended repercussions.

Santiago, owner of the factory, is adamant about keeping the status quo. Cheché is his bitter half-brother who’s more than ready for change. Santiago’s wife Ofelia tries to maintain the peace, but discontent has been set in motion. Older daughter Conchita, whose husband Palomo has a roving eye, is drawn to the lector, while younger daughter Marela is swept away by the Anna Karenina story. As life begins to resemble art, the family becomes powerless to prevent the passionate novel from intruding on their real world.

Director Beatriz Esteban-Messina, who has helmed numerous productions over many years, previously directed The Diary of Adam and Eve and Love Letters for TNT, and has been onstage as Julia in Lend Me a Tenor and as Ethel in her Perry-nominated performance in Moon Over Buffalo, both with TNT.

Marcelino Feliciano of Montclair, making his TNT debut as lector Juan Julian, has appeared in a Black Box production of The Dining Room and as Rodriguez in Take Me Out at the Nutley Little Theatre. Also marking his first TNT appearance, as factory owner Santiago, is Ft. Lee resident Julio C. Irizarry, who has appeared elsewhere in Lovers and Other Strangers, Arsenic and Old Lace and Guys and Dolls. Lisa Dascoli of Little Falls, portraying Santiago’s wife Ofelia, numbers among her onstage credits Charlotte in Moon Over Buffalo for TNT and Maggie in The Shadow Box at Manhattan Ensemble Theatre.

Wendy Tiburcio, a resident of Elmwood Park, whose role as elder daughter Conchita is another TNT debut, has trod the boards elsewhere in The Odd Couple–The Female Version and as a member of improv troupe Nutty by Nature.  Springfield resident Dennis R. Rojas, cast as Conchita’s husband Palomo, has returned to the U.S. after 17 years in Costa Rica and is making his U.S. theatrical debut. Maria Pagoulatos of Clifton, portraying younger daughter Marela, recently appeared as Rita in TNT’s production of Prelude to a Kiss, and has performed with the NJ Mystery Company. Union City’s William Shapiro, whose role as Santiago’s half-brother Cheché marks his first TNT appearance, numbers among his onstage credits John Proctor in The Crucible, Laertes in Hamlet and Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls.

Andy Rodriguez of Paterson serves as producer. Marilyn Schilkie, a Teaneck resident, presides as stage manager.

There will be a talkback with the director and actors after the performance.

Tickets for Anna in the Tropics are $15; $12 for students and seniors; and $10 for theatre parties of 10 or more. Opening night only: Two tickets for the price of one (on $15 tickets).

TEANECK NEW THEATRE TO STAGE IF WE ARE WOMEN

Teaneck New Theatre (TNT) will present a staged reading of If We Are Women, a moving drama about family relationships by Joanna McClelland Glass, as the fourth production of the theatre troupe’s 25th season. Directed by Marilyn Schilkie of Teaneck, If We Are Women takes to the boards November 11-19 at The Ethical Culture Society, 687 Larch Avenue, Teaneck. Curtain time on Friday and Saturday evenings is at 8:00 p.m. Curtain times for the two matinees are Sunday, Nov. 13, at 3:30 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 19, at 3:00 p.m.

Previous productions of If We Are Women have starred such renowned actresses as Blythe Danner, at the Williamstown Festival Theatre in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, and Joan Plowright in London. The London Financial Times had this to say about If We Are Women: “This play is tenderly affecting. There are enough funny lines to keep tears safely at bay for two hours.”

If We Are Women is the story of three generations of women who get together in a Connecticut beach house. They are Jessica Cohen, a novelist whose long-time lover has recently died; her mother Ruth MacMillan, an illiterate woman from the Canadian prairie; her former mother-in-law Rachel Cohen, a well-educated American; and her 18-year-old daughter Polly, who’s seemingly preparing to attend Yale. With emotion and humor, the older women explore their joint and individual pasts, their regrets, insights and relationships, and attempt to pass along their hard-gained knowledge to Polly. In the process, they begin to come to terms with their own choices.

The actresses who bring these engaging characters to life are Patt Tanner of North Haledon as the somewhat fragile, sometimes melodramatic Jessica; Nancy Price of Hackensack as likeable, no-nonsense Ruth; Brenda Sherman of Bergenfield as witty, frustrated Rachel; and Heather Drew of New Milford as vivacious, romantic Polly.

Bob Schilkie of Teaneck serves as producer. Serving as stage managers are Union City resident Beatriz Esteban-Messina and New Milford resident Barbara Liebgott.

Tickets for If We Are Women are $15; $12 for students and seniors; and $10 for theatre parties of 10 or more. Opening night only: Two tickets for the price of one (on $15 tickets). For reservations and information, call TNT at (201) 692-0200.
