TEANECK NEW THEATRE PRESENTS BLOODY, BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON
Teaneck New Theatre (TNT)—in association with The Hackensack Cultural Arts Center (HCAC)—takes the stage with the first New Jersey production of Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson, a pop/rock musical that reinvents the life of the seventh U.S. president. The book is by Alex Timbers. Michael Friedman wrote the music and lyrics. Alex Perez of Guttenberg is the director and Wayne resident Charles Santoro serves as musical director.
Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson, the second production of TNT’s 28th season, runs from May 9-18 at The Hackensack Cultural Arts Center, 39 Broadway, Hackensack Show times are 8:00 PM. on Fridays, 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Saturdays, and 3:00 PM. on Sundays. Andrew Jackson was an unconventional populist who emerged from an early life of hardship and poverty in the Tennessee hills to become a war hero, the governor of Florida and then president of United States (on his second try). His relationship with Rachel, a married woman who later became his wife, created a scandal, and his decision to relocate thousands of Indian tribes was not a popular one. Old Hickory, as he was known, marched to his own drummer, making problematic judgments along the way. That’s why, even today, historians remain divided about his legacy. That’s also why his life lends itself to be re-imagined in this inventive musical. |
Director Alex Perez explains that he was drawn to Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson because “this rock musical brings a great balanced viewpoint on American politics and how absurd our system can be, as well as how important it is to our democracy.” Also, says Alex, “It’s a fun fresh way to learn about Andrew Jackson and some deep dark episodes of our history. I loved this show when it premiered on Broadway and it’s nice to share new creative opportunities with this production.”
